Project Leaders are the foundation of the HandsOn Bay Area community. They are committed and enthusiastic volunteers who are ready to step forward to share their passion with others. On Be the Change Day, our Project Leaders take on the tasks that ensure that our high-impact projects fuel further volunteer action.
We invite you to apply to join our team and help 1,000 volunteers be the change they want to see in the world. We will give you the tools you need to develop and manage a large-scale volunteer project. Click here for a full list of this year's projects.
- Explore the mission and goals of your nonprofit partner
- Attend one of our evening leadership trainings in June or July
- Meet with your nonprofit partner to discuss details concerning your project
- Complete a tool list for your project

Complete and deliver paperwork to HandsOn Bay Area staff in a timely manner
- Secure coffee and food donations from local businesses
- Form a contingency plan in case of rain or
last-minute changes in the number of volunteers expected
- Assess what tasks your volunteers can realistically complete at your 4-hour project
- Help to recruit volunteers for your project
- Plan for your project kick-off and wrap up
- Sign in volunteers and collect waiver forms at the start of your project
- Give project kick-off and wrap-up speeches to welcome volunteers and inspire further action
- Ensure volunteers are kept busy with all the tasks your nonprofit partner needs
- Be a current HandsOn Bay Area project leader
- OR, be willing to complete HandsOn Bay Area project leader training, including:
-- Creating an account on HOBA.org
-- Attending at least 3 HandsOn Bay Area projects from our Project Calendar
-- Taking our online Project Leader Training
-- Co-leading at a calendar project with an experienced Project Leader
-- Leading two projects before Be the Change Day on Oct. 1
We will contact you with more information on that process after you've applied, but in general it should take about 20 hours (at your own pace) to become a Project Leader.
- Be enthusiastic about volunteer engagement in your community
- Be willing to learn and teach others about the value of service
- Be comfortable
with downloading documents and sharing information with fellow leaders on our social networking site
- Be able to attend one 1.5-hour training in person at a site in San Francisco, the East Bay or San Jose
