On Be The Change Day, volunteers will remove invasive plants to make room for native species and reduce fire danger in Eastshore State Park, a former garbage dump that is now an open public space along the Berkeley waterfront. Learn how this former garbage landfill is being restored for wildlife and recreation on a short interpretive walk to the work site. Please wear comfortable clothing in layers, that you don’t mind getting dirty, and closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking/work boots (no open-toe or slip-on shoes). Join volunteers on Be The Change Day in this unique habitat--- built on landfill, but now a thriving marsh maintained primarily by youth and community volunteers. We will help to plant native species, weed non-natives, and clean and maintain the wild areas of the park. Help with lakeshore cleanup, weeding and cleaning in the garden center and helping around the wildlife refuge center. Keep this important sanctuary for local animals and city-dwellers! You can also take an educational nature hike to the summit of San Bruno Mountain. And keep your eyes peeled - you might see the endangered Mission Blue Butterfly or an elusive San Bruno mountain lion!

The garden is maintained by the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens, a community organization whose mission is to develop and maintain the garden and provide educational programs. Help preserve these rare plants for the benefit of the community. Our Be The Change Day team will work side-by-side with budding horticulturalists restoring their community one seed at a time. Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ) works to cultivate the next generation of community leaders in one of the Bay Area's poorest neighborhoods, empowering at-risk youth through environmental education, mentoring programs, civic activism, and good old-fashioned hard work in Bayview's few remaining green spaces.

On Be The Change Day, volunteers will help maintain an organic urban farm at Alameda Point Collaborative (APC) . APC provides formerly homeless residents with employment and healthy local food with a garden, nursery, and youth-run nutrition programs. Volunteers will build raised beds, plant vegetables, dig, water, compost, weed, and many other outdoor gardening tasks. Volunteers will dig, plant, weed, and compost, on this farm that honors the region’s rich agricultural past while demonstrating how powerfully abundant its agricultural future can be. Volunteers are encouraged to take home some veggies with them. On Be The Change Day, volunteers will help sort and organize medical supplies at MedShare's Western Distribution Center. MedShare collects surplus medical supplies and equipment from U.S. hospitals, manufacturers and distributors and makes them available to underserved hospitals and clinics. These urgently needed supplies will save lives and aliviate suffering in clinics worldwide. Activity level: Light Ages 18 and up. (East Bay: San Leandro)

Join us on Be The Change Day when volunteers will paint a colorful mural in the dining room at The Next Door Homeless Shelter. Help transform a dining room in need of some brightening while lifting the hearts and minds of the individuals who need inspiration in their lives! This emergency shelter is home to 300 men and women for one week at a time. The shelter serves a hot breakfast and dinner to every client. On Be The Change Day, volunteers will tend gardens, and paint benches and interior spaces at Everett Middle School, located near sunny Dolores Park. This school, which serves low-income youth, is part of the San Francisco Unified School District and is in need of some revitalization.

Be The Change at Francisco Middle School, a landmark school serving low-income youth located in the heart of North Beach. Help revitalize the school by tending to the garden, painting benches and interior spaces, or decorating the halls with room numbers. As part of the San Francisco Unified School District, this school could use all the TLC you can bring on BTC Day.
